Kunar Province is located in the east of Afghanistan. It has 175 kilometers long border with Pakistan at the south and southeast. The population of kunar Province is approximately 380,000. 95% of them are primarily Pashtuns, with 5% Nuristani and other minoritiesa.
Pashtun tribes which are living in kunar are listed below:
Mashwani:
Mashwani tribe is originally Gharghakhti (غرغښتي) Pashtuns. Mashwani are also divided into many other khel (parts); such as Gullezai, Alikhel, Shinokhel, Qwartakian, akakhel, wardag. Mashwani are typically living in Narhy, Dangam and asmar of kunar. Large number of Mashwanies can also be found in KPK province of Pakistan.
Sapi (Safi):
According to most of historical sources, the Safi tribe is considered to be one of the largest tribe in Kunar. Orignally they were shifted from Ghorhi Mari to Sra Kamar, and from there they entered to kunar by Shongrhy Ghakhi. At the beginning, they settled in Bahar Abad. But because of ethnic power of the regional people they couldn’t infiltrated there. Later on, they came to Deogul from the Seen (river) and settled there. They create a large center of Safi’s in this valley. After that, they spread in many other parts of kunar such as Baddil valley and Pech valley (Pech dara).
Shinwari:
Due to some reasons, about 300 years ago Shinwari tribe shifted from Sra Kmar to Shigal. Basically Shinwari tribe captured the land of Shigal from other tribes under the leadership of Shaikh baba whose real name was Zakria.
Salarzai:
Salarzai tribe is also a branch of the Sarhban group and are typically living in Dangam, Asmar, Shangrhy, Shaaly, Naarhy, Barikoot, Dam Village, Narang, Sarkanrho, Ganjgal, Tanko, Sholtan, Marawara, Aghzbagh, Saawo, Saawo Khwarh, Sawky, Baargam, Azargaam, Azergull, Dambaro, Hasara, Karhala and Donaye.
Momand:
Momand is one of the greatest tribe of Sarhban (سړبن) Social group. They are living in Asad Abad, Khas-Kunar, Sarkanho, Noorgull, and Narang of kunar Province.
Molagori:
Molagoris are Sarhbani (سړبني) Pashtons. They are belong to the great tribe of Momand. Malagori tribe is living in Darang and Kotki villages.
Mamond:
Mamond tribe belongs to Sarhban (سړبن) social group and is a branch of Khakhikhel tribe. There are two type of mamonds: Kakazi and Warha (small) Mamond. Some of Warha mamond are living in Shrhotan, Dangam and Wattapor.
Sadaat (Sayeed):
There are many families of Sayeed’s in Kunar. In kunar, the main village of Sadaat tribe is Pashad where Sayeed Mahmmud Pacha were used to live. Beside of Pashad, Sayeeds are also living in some other parts of kunar such as; Yargul, Khas Kunar, Koz Narang and some other places.
Alkozai:
Alkozaies are typically Sarhbani (سړبني) pashtons which belong with Danio Zerak. They live in Sarkano district of kunar.
Sarkanhi:
Sarkanhi tribe is a brance of Alkozai and are living in Sarkanho of Kunar.
Adremzai (Abdul Rahim Zai):
This tribe belongs to Ghalji social group and is a branch of Ahmadzai. They are living in Khewa of Kunar.
Lodin:
Lodin tribe belongs to Gharkhti (غرښتي) Pashtons and are living in some parts of Kunar.
Yousafzai:
Yousafzai is also one of the great tribe of Pashtons. They can be found in some parts of Kunar.
Bazargkhail:
Bazargkhail is a Heliowia (هلویه) tribe which are living in Barang, Koddo and Karha Mar. According to some sources they can also be found in Kotki, Hakim Abad (Koli Gram) and Sawky.
Tarklanhi:
Tarklanhi tribe blongs to the social group of Sarhban (سړبن) and are living in Kunar
Khakhikhail:
Khakhikhail tribe is also living in some parts of kunar province. According to a source this tribe was shifted to kunar in the era of Mirza-alagh-baig.
Malakzi:
Malakzi are living in kunar and Darang Jar qala (port).
